Every Student Communicates:We Just Need to Listen

Giving all students a voice through the Expressive Communication Profile: Helpful for all students with communication difficulties.

A practical tool for understanding and supporting the full range of a student’s communication. The profile guides staff in developing personalised strategies to better understand and meet each student’s needs.

In inclusive classrooms, communication doesn’t look the same for every student. Some children (especially those with autism) may not use spoken language. While others may struggle to understand verbal instructions or express emotions and needs.

As teachers, we often focus on words a student says. But their true message? That’s where the Expressive Communication Profile helps teachers:

  • Recognize each student’s communication style
  • Identify messages they may struggle to express
  • Respond consistently and supportively
  • Foster inclusion, connection, and autonomy

It encourages reflection on how students express basic needs (like hunger or pain), social cues (wanting space or attention), and emotions (confusion, anger, joy).

Completed through observation, collaboration, and classroom insights- any degree of support: Whether used to create support plans, create continuity in caregivers, or simply as a guide to better communication, it’s a valuable step toward more inclusive, responsive teaching.
